About the Event
In the 1950s two unlikely groups came together. The International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, and Hollywood actors who had been blacklisted for their leftist politics. United in effort, they created Salt of the Earth.
Based on the true story of miners’ strike in 1950s New Mexico. The film follows the story of Latinx workers who strike for equal pay and conditions with white miners. The movie, which used real miners and their families as actors, is considered one of the first feminist critiques of capitalism put to film.
Join Meretz Australia this (Erev) May Day for a screening of Salt of the Earth as we mark International Workers’ Day together.
