About Meretz Australia

For over 60 years, Meretz Australia (formerly Hashomer Hatzair-Mapam) has been the vanguard of Socialist Zionist, progressive, and social-democrat politics in Jewish Australia; the voice for those within the community who yearn to see an Israel that is based on social justice and that lives in harmony with its neighbours.

 

We believe in:

• The protection of the human rights of all Israelis, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual preference 

• A social-democratic Israeli state where the weak are not left helpless, where workers’ rights are upheld and where exploitation is challenged at every level

• The separation of religion and State, allowing everyone to live as their conscience demands without imposing their beliefs on others

• Peace based on the two state solution, as continued occupation of the Palestinian Territories is plainly unsustainable on moral, economic and social grounds.

 

Meretz Australia also sees its mission as being to engage and encourage the next generation of youth leaders. In particular, this means continuing to provide physical and ideological assistance to Hashomer Hatzair Australia so that the youth movement can grow and remain a vibrant part of the Australian Jewish  and Zionist Communities.
